Home in the Church

I am twenty-two years old and currently beginning my first year of medical school in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. I come from a family of seven and was raised as a child in rural Oklahoma on a small farm until we moved to Stillwater where I went to high school and Oklahoma State University.

Being home schooled with my brother and sisters until the eighth grade, I knew that my parents cared much for us and were meticulously careful that we grew up in a positive Christian environment. My mother was raised the daughter of a Baptist minister and my father was saved at age 19. Thus, my parents as strong Christians desired for us to be the same and brought strong moral influence to our family.

With the criteria of having strong family values my parents began to seek for a place, or “church,” where they could “settle down.” Once they found a church that they thought met this criteria, they began to participate. Although they were involved with the work as interpreters for the hearing impaired, they eventually felt within that the Lord was not satisfied and they moved on. My siblings and I of course followed along, only interested in a Sunday school that gave us candy as a reward for bringing our friends. Thus we went from place to place, eventually not knowing really what we were seeking but simultaneously knowing we were not satisfied.

Eventually my parents came to the realization that there was no place where they would be satisfied, and that surely none of these places were fully satisfying to the Lord. So we stayed home. It was not long before my parents were contacted by another family who also home schooled. This family met with the local church in Oklahoma City. After a long time (nearly two years) of their care for our family. Although cautious, we were very curious and open to these Christians, who truly loved the Lord and loved us. As we spent more and more time together my parents gradually realized that the Lord was satisfied with the testimony of oneness in the local churches because He had abundantly blessed us with a sweet flow of life.

Now that I am older, I thank the Lord every day for His mercy that He led my parents and family to the local church. Although, being a child, I originally did not choose to meet with the local church; as an adult I have decided to meet. I can testify that my family is home in the church and that we have given up our search.
